The Ala-Keitele Music Institute in Äänekoski, Finland, is an arts institution that offers individualized music education for those either pursuing music as a hobby or as a profession. The staff of 24 full and part-time teachers currently work with over 400students.

General goals of music education:
  • to learn the basic skills of playing an instrument
  • to continuously develop
  • to create a life-long positive relationship with music

    The unique music school system in Finland forms an entirety that provides goal-oriented instruction, progressing up to the university level at moderate cost due to state funding.

Education levels:
  • music club (up to 10 years)
  • introductory (age 7-10 years)
  • basic (classical and pop/jazz) (studies begin at ages 7-12, the study time is 8 years)
  • music institute (4 years of study after passing the basic level)

The curriculum follows the national guidelines set by the National Board of Education. Once the music institute level is completed, together with the matriculation examination, the student can apply to study music at a professional level.

The Ala-Keitele Music Institute provides instruction in most common instruments (piano, string/wind instruments, percussion, etc.) as well as in traditional instruments such as the Finnish zither – kantele and classical and pop & jazz vocals. Theory of music, chamber music and rock band are also taught. Students gain additional experience in the variety of orchestral ensembles offered.
